UNEARTHED
Devised by the MACTPD Cohort (2021-22), Unearthed is a contemporary circus show made up of 3 small performances inspired by the Finnish story of The Seven Brothers. These 3 performances are Push and Pull, Kinship and Vernal Equinox.
Push and Pull explores the internal struggles people face in a society that asks them to suppress their feelings in servitude of being resilient. It is an exploration of internal feelings and external behaviour through two performers. Placed in the middle of a forest, they investigate their dynamic through combat, tension, pressures and balance, with this, their relationship forms. As Internal and External feelings are often intertwined, the two performers examine power balance and hierarchy throughout the show.
Situated around a summer thunderstorm in the woods, Kinship reminisces on the experience of brotherhood and simpler times. With inspiration from the character types in Seven Brothers, Kinship focuses on the personalities of The Leader, The Quiet One, The Smart One, and The Instigator. Through these characters, Kinship investigates the theme of personal identity vs. group identity and ultimately evokes a comedic, yet heartfelt, a moment of nostalgia.
Using a combination of circus skills and original music, Vernal Equinox embodies the process of Winter melting into Spring. In nature, the Vernal Equinox is the point where night and day are of equal length, and symbolises the beginning of spring. The show sees a personified Winter and Spring journey through the forest. We took inspiration from The Seven Brothers as the older brother (Winter) and younger brother (Spring), are shaped by the presence of Change. The show deals with themes of violence, letting go of the past, and accepting the inevitable.
